Moving from free wordpress.COM, to private hosting with wordpress software??

  I am pretty confused here… I intend to setup a website with its own domain name, using wordpress software.
  The plan was to mess around with the free wordpress.com blog, then transfer it to hostgator hosting, using the software from wordpress.ORG.
  Now i’m confused if i can just transfer it, what the difference is from the .com to the .org, and am just feeling more confused than when i started :(
