Moving from WP.org to WP.com

  • Unknown's avatar

I created a blog using WP.org and wampserver on my computer without a host. I then followed the instruction to move it WP.com by downloading the .xml file. I got the email that files were transferred and logged in. when I view the page it says “Nothing found” and has no content. I can see some of the pages via the dashboard but cannot view the actual page. I saw in the instructions that I can choose the option to Download & import file attachments if you want to move your media files but could not figure out how. What do I do?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I do appreciate it. I’m a newbie and am learning the ropes. Have a great day timethief!

  • Hi there, it sounds like there are two issues here.

In terms of images, the WordPress.com import tool wouldn’t be able to pull images off a local install, since we don’t have access to your computer, only sites that are on the Internet.

Here is an example of what your image files look like in your export file:

The IP address 127.0.0.1 refers to a localhost, i.e. your computer. We aren’t able to access that.

As a workaround, you could either upload your site to a publicly accessible web host, or re-upload your images manually on your new site.

In terms of posts and pages, when you describe what you did:

I then followed the instruction to move it WP.com by downloading the .xml file. I got the email that files were transferred and logged in.

I see five pages listed here, under Pages in your dashboard:

    https://cubanbread.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php?post_type=page

To get your pages showing up in your menu, you still need to assign your custom menu to the Primary Menu location, under Appearance > Menus:

    https://cubanbread.wordpress.com/wp-admin/nav-menus.php?action=locations

Did your site have any posts, or only pages?

Thanks so much! I’ll get to reloading my images and assigning my menu. Yes, there are only pages.

  • Good luck! If you need further help just let us know.
