Moving my blog from wp.org to wp.com – questions

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi everybody
I already have an active blog with WP.org but, since I am not very experienced with codes and website making, I found the support at .org a bit inadequate and slow for my needs (of course, I understand it’s for free).
I do like a lot WordPress environment though and I was thinking to move my blog to WP.com in search, above all, for a better and more effective support and if this means paying a fee I would be happy to make it in exchange of a better help.
What I would like to know is:
-will I be able to keep my actual blog url (http://blog.imaginevenice.com)?
-will I be able to keep the same theme I am using now at .org?
    Thanks for the help
    Fabio

This is a better link to your site: http://blog.imaginevenice.com/

If you own the base URL (imaginevenice.com) then I think you should be able to Domain Map to the same URL, BUT I think you would need to keep a token presence on your old host for that to happen, since you want to map to a sub-domain – if you own imaginevenice.com you could map to that easily (no blog.imaginevenice.com) and not need to be also on your old host.

Themes – you are limited to the over 100 themes you see under Dashboard >> appearance >> Themes – so you need to look at those available here as you can’t upload your own Theme.

You are also bound by the Terms of Service (no user ads, affiliate links etc) WordPress.COM does put a few ads on your site to help pay the bills but you can get the no ad upgrade for about $ 30– a year if you want to be ad free.

Support here is free also and done by unpaid volunteers that are your fellow bloggers for the most part. We like to think the support here is great, but it can still take a few hours.

    Hope this helps a bit.

Fabio, here are some links that might help.

Procedure to move from WP.org to WP.com:

    How to map a subdomain:

    Themes available at WordPress.com:

I found this statement which I am not sure I understand completely: “You can move your WordPress.com blog to a web host that allows editing and uploading of completely custom themes.” Does it mean that if I put my wp.org blog on a web host I will be allowed to use any custom theme of my liking ?

WordPress.com is a multiuser blogging platform. Here all blogs wearing the same theme are using the same template. We cannot access and edit those template files only Staff can. Every edit they make affects all blogs wearing the same theme. The themes we use here are all adapted so they will run on this wordpress MU (multiuser) blogging platform. WordPress.com and wordpress.org run on different software and the themes even with the same names are not coded the same and cannot be transferred from wordpress.com and used on wordpress.org installs. It also means that any CSS editing done on a free hosted wordpress.com theme is not transferable to the wordpress.org version of the theme with the same name.

    Yes!

You are already on a WordPress.ORG install hosted on Godaddy.

The Theme restriction has to do with security and reliability – go over to WordPress.ORG and look at the number of Theme problems that can occur.

Also the Themes here are highly modified with lots of extras called Widgets to put in the functions that you need Plug-in’s for on a WordPress.ORG install.

The no Plug-in’s here is a security reason – a bad Plug-in can crash a lot of server things and take down many blogs.
