Moving my site from wordpress.org to wordpress.com

Hi there, I am interested in moving my site from wordpress.org (hosted by SiteGround) back to wordpress.com. However, my main issue currently is that my site is a bilingual site and is achieved using ‘polylang’ plug-in (www.travelwithwinny.com). However, currently my main traffic is through the Chinese blog which all have extensions of http://www.travelwithwinny.com/zh.

I am scared even with the domain mapping, my site won’t be able to be transferred successfully. I understand I will have to rearrange my website accordingly, but I have published a Chinese book and on the info page it now has my home page as http://www.travelwithwinny.com/zh and i dont want to lose all the url and Domain authority I have built up. I was hoping if you can please can tell me if I will have trouble migrating? And if i do have problem with migration, will there be someone here to help me? Since I am not very technical. Thank you, appreciate your help.

  • Hi there,

Your current site is using the www subdomain in the URL and it is hosted in a subdirectory, /zh, rather than the root domain, travelwithwinny.com. Neither of those are supported on WordPress.com, so you are definitely going to take a hit in terms of SEO if you migrate to us.

This should be temporary – once search engines re-index your site at the new URL your search engine traffic should return to normal – but it could take several weeks for this to happen and there’s really no way to avoid it.

For detailed steps on migrating your site to WordPress.com you can see https://transferto.wordpress.com/

Also note that if you want to continue using the Polylang plugin, you can do so on our Business Plan.
