Moving to wordpress.com to register my existing domain

  • Unknown's avatar

I have registered my domain through another web host provider but it expires tomorrow with them and moving forward I would like to register it through wordpress.com services. Is there a way to switch it and redirect to my wordpress.com blog prior to the expiration tomorrow? Or do I need to wait for it to expire then claim it? I don’t want to renew with the other web host provider and then separately go through you guys to re-direct. I’d like to keep both transactions together.

    Thanks!

    DON’T let it expire.

You can’t transfer the domain registration to WordPress.COM they are not set up for incoming domain names – you can map the domain name to a blog here.

You can transfer the registration to another Registrar – just not WordPress.COM

If you let the domain registration expire it can take 60 to 90 days to revert to the wild and will not work during that time frame – and the name can be registered by a squatter and held for hostage at a large price

Great input. Exactly what I needed to know. I was trying to avoid re-registering my domain with the existing web provider AND paying the cost to map it through wordpress.com because right now I’m paying $14/year for the domain and then I’ll have to pay the additional mapping cost through wordpress.com VS. just being able to do it all on wordpress.com for $18/year… Oh well, worth the extra few dollars a year to ensure I get to keep my domain!

    Thanks again.

If you look around you should be able to save a bit over the $ 14– / year – there are several companies that do registration
