must followers have a wordpress account?

  I would like to invite followers who do not want to open a wordpress account (they are elderly). Is there any way to invite followers (viewers) without them having to open an account?

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  You can add the Subscribe widget and then they can subscribe via email.

  but that still requires them to create an account….?

  No, it does not. They can subscribe via email. You see it as a logged-in option only because you are logged in.
