My account email is defunct. How do I change it?

When I set up my account, I used a different email from my usually address. Since then, that email has become defunct, and I can no longer access it. Because of this, I can’t change my email (because I can’t recieve the conformation email for the change). What should I do, in this case?

The Update Email Address support page says:
Once you’ve entered a new email address and clicked “Save Account Settings,” you’ll receive an email at the new address with a confirmation link. You must click the confirmation link to confirm the change and update the email on your account.
According to this, the confirmation link will be at the new email address, not the one being replaced.
