  I want to keep my current site live before I create my new word press site. When I transfer my domain to word press, will I be able to control whether is goes live?

  You can create a site here at WordPress.com with the free plan. When you’re ready you can upgrade to a paid plan and transfer or map a domain you already own to the WordPress.com site. (That site can be set to “private” whilst you work on it if you wish).
