My page will timeout unless I use a VPN

What gives? I tried to update my wordpress site today, but I kept receiving a server timeout error every time. This happened both from my dashboard as well as when I typed in the url to my site manually.
I was finally able to connect, but I had to use a VPN to do so. What the heck is the problem here? I use this site for my students to have quick access to lesson materials, but if this keeps up I’m going to simply delete the entire site and start from scratch elsewhere.
Of course, the good folks at wordpress don’t have a direct person to speak with, so I’m limited to reading faqs and forums, which are of little to no use.

There were and are no known serverproblems at wordpress.com. So the connectionproblem is due to a local problem – most of the time a firewall – but it could be somewhere upstream. And some countries block our servers.
You could start by doing a traceroute from your computer to find the bottleneck.
