My site is down

Hi, I have downgraded my account from ‘Free + External Domain’ to Free, because I no longer want to use the external domain, but in the process something must have gone wrong, and now my site is inaccessible.

When I navigate to the standard URL ([blogname].wordpress.com), I receive a message ‘Error: the domain you requested can not be served at this time. An error report has already been sent to the technical team. Please try again in ten minutes.’ This has been the case since I have downgraded the account over a week ago.

In my account settings, I still see the primary site with the old domain, and I I have no idea how to switch back to the standard site URL.
    Please help.

  • Hi there,

This is happening because you had installed plugins on your site a few weeks ago – sites with plugins work a bit differently from regular WordPress.com sites, so we make some changes behind the scenes when you install a plugin or custom theme and those changes aren’t rolled back automatically when you cancel.

To enable you to use the free address again we’ll need to revert your site to how it was before you installed plugins. This process will wipe out any content you created after you installed plugins on the site, so please let me know whether you had created any new content during the past three weeks. Then I can make sure to back that up before reverting your site, and restore it again once the process is complete.

If you haven’t created any new content during this time, let me know and I can revert your site right away.

Thank you for the explanation. Please go ahead and revert the site to its pre-plugin state. Thanks again!

  • Okay, your site is now back on the free address, and you should be able to access it as before.

Please let me know if I can help with anything else.
