My Website Comes Out All Empty

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi my website (www.sarapci.com) is empty for some reason. I am able to reach the pages but I cannot reach the actual site.

    Any ideas?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

It appears that http://www.sarapci.com is a domain for a JetPack site, but you have the nameservers of the site pointed to a blank WordPress.com site. You’ll need to update the nameservers back to where the site is hosted to view the self-hosted site.

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

Hi Darnell, thanks for your email.

They were pointing to the correct nameservers before but showed a problem with JetPack that I could not fix. Whatever I did from the WordPress dashboard gave me an error.

I realised I need to pay to have a standalone website (not x.wordpress.com) at WordPress. When looking at the options I decided to have a personal plan at WordPress.

Now I want to switch to this option but WP says I need to point to their servers. Can I continue being hosted where I host now (Laughing Squid) and still have a personal site at WP? What should I do next?

  • If you are now wanting to have your site hosted at WordPress.com, you’ll want to import your site content from Laughing Squid over to WordPress.com. That what it looked like you were in the process of doing since your domain was already pointing over to WordPress.com.

Otherwise, you’ll need to point your domain back over to Laughing Squid since both your domain and site is hosted there. You should be able to see your site again.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks!

    Hi Darnell,

The pointing of the servers is done but when I check the import options I am unable to import from WordPress because I don’t have an exported file from the previous website.

How can I import from old files that I can no longer access?

I always used WP but had the hosting at Laughing Squid.

    Thanks in advance,
    Emin

  • You had a self-hosted WordPress.org site hosted at Laughing Squid, correct? if so, you’ll need to log into the dashboard of your self-hosted site in order to download and export the XML file of your site content. You can no longer access the content because you no longer have a subscription to Laughing Squid? If so, I’d reach out to them and see if they will allow you to retrieve your content.

    Thanks,

    Hi Darnell,

    The dashboard is gone.

But I was able to get help from Laughing Squid and downloaded my database (as an .sql file) and now I’m getting the website with FTP. I’m downloading three folders: logs, web, web_logs.

Now how can I upload these to my site?

    Emin

  • Hi there,

We do not allow FTP (File Transfer Protocol) access to any WordPress.com blogs. Please see our support page on alternatives to using FTP:

Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

    I’ll read that.

Meanwhile I’m confused. Is my site going to be a wordpress.com or a wordpress.org site? I would like to keep my http://www.sarapci.com URL but I don’t care where it’s hosted. Having it all under WP seems to be a good way to do it since I use WP to administrate it anyway.

Darnell, you can disregard my previous question. I found a document that explains the difference and a wordpress.com site will work for me.

    BUT

I accidentally deleted my site before exporting it as a wordpress xml document so I can no longer move with that option. Unless you can somehow help me to retrieve it. I had used jetpack and wp backup so the site can be somewhere backed up.

    OR

Is there any way to move my site over to wordpress.com if all I have is my .sql and my ftp files?

    Thanks in advance,
    Emin

    Update:

I also found a backup made by a backup plugin from wordpress.org. It must be called wp-backup or something.

But I realized the only plugins I can use in wordpress.com are the jetpack ones….

  • I’m afraid there is no way to import your old WordPress.org site without the xml file. Perhaps you could talk to your old webhost and ask if they can provide a backup?
