My whole post is showing in email notifications to subscribers

    Hi,
When I am about to publish a post, I click to send a notification to my subscribers. But their email shows the full post rather than just the excerpt.

In settings – Reading – I have excerpts clicked.

I read here about adding a ‘read more’ block. I did this and sent a test email and that worked. So I published the post. But the email to subscribers shows the full post, including the read more block.

Can you help? People won’t visit the blog if they can read it in an email.

    Hello,

I understand you want your subscriber emails to show only the excerpt of your posts instead of the full content.

You’ve already added a “Read More” block and confirmed it works in test emails, which is great. However, subscriber emails on WordPress.com typically include the full post content by default, even if excerpts are set in your site settings.

A common workaround is to create a custom summary at the top of your post and include a  link to guide readers to your site.

Start your post with a short introduction or excerpt highlighting the main points. This acts as a teaser for subscribers and site visitors.

At the end of your summary, add something like: “Read the full post on the blog: [Link to post]” using the full URL.

Even if subscriber emails pull the full post, the summary and link will direct readers to your site for the full experience.

The simplest way to add the link is using a text link. Here’s a guide to help: WordPress.com: Add Links.

    I hope this helps!

But that would mean that subscribers are still getting the full post in the email. Isn’t there a way to stop that?

  • Hey! 👋

But that would mean that subscribers are still getting the full post in the email. Isn’t there a way to stop that?

You’re right on this. So, I took a look at your Newsletter settings, and I noticed that under “For each new post email, include” it’s currently set to Full text. That’s why your subscribers are seeing the entire post in their emails.

To fix this, you can switch it to Excerpt instead. You’ll find the option here: https://wordpress.com/settings/newsletter/despitepain.wordpress.com

We also have a guide with more details on these settings here:
    https://wordpress.com/support/newsletter-settings/#featured-image-and-email-byline

Once you make that change, your subscribers will start receiving just the excerpts in their emails, with a link to read the full post on your site.

Hope this fixes it, but do let me know if you need anything else.
