Need guidance recovering access to domain and WordPress.com account for legitima
-
Hello WordPress.com Support Team,
I need guidance regarding a legitimate recovery situation involving the domain:
We are currently preparing a migration of the website to a new hosting/server environment, but we discovered that we do not have access to the original WordPress.com / Automattic account that appears to manage the domain or DNS configuration.
Current situation:
- We do NOT have access to the original login credentials
- We do NOT have access to the original email account
- We do NOT have invoices or payment receipts
- We do NOT know with certainty which user originally registered or connected the domain
- The people currently involved inherited the administration of the website after previous personnel changes
Important:
We are NOT trying to bypass security measures or obtain unauthorized access.
We are only trying to understand what legitimate recovery options may exist in order to avoid losing the domain and properly continue operating the website. We would appreciate guidance regarding:
- How to confirm whether the domain is currently managed through WordPress.com / Automattic
- What minimum information could help verify ownership or administration rights
- Whether recovery is possible through:
- existing authenticated sessions
- connected devices
- DNS/domain validation
- hosting validation
- historical ownership verification
- What happens if the domain is close to expiration and access cannot be recovered in time
- Whether there is any official escalation process for organizational or institutional ownership situations
We understand that security verification is necessary and we fully respect those procedures.
Our goal is simply to proceed legally and correctly with the migration without risking the loss of the domain.
Any official guidance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you very much.

Thank you for reaching out and for explaining the situation.
Since this involves access to a WordPress.com account and potentially domain/DNS management, we won’t be able to verify ownership or make account changes directly here in the public forums. Please do not post any private information here, such as email addresses, passwords, payment details, transaction IDs, receipts, or internal organizational documents.
The best next step is to use our Account Recovery process:
https://wordpress.com/support/account-recovery/
If you don’t have access to the original email address or login credentials, please gather any information that may help verify ownership, such as previous WordPress.com receipts, transaction IDs, activation emails, saved login details, recovery SMS access, connected social logins, or any other account-related information available to your organization.
You can also review this guide for the specific types of information that may help verify ownership:
https://wordpress.com/support/account-recovery/verify-ownership/
If ownership can be verified, our Account Recovery team can advise on the next steps privately. If ownership cannot be verified, we won’t be able to provide access to the account or disclose account details for security reasons.
Please submit the recovery request through the official form so the team can review it securely.
