Need my Domain Back – Accidentally Canceled
-
Hello! I made a mistake when registering my domain (www.hartworksdesign.com), misunderstanding the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org. I had intended to use a host such as Bluehost, register my domain through them, and use the installed WordPress plugin through that website. Instead, I registered my domain through WordPress.com, realized my mistake, and canceled my subscription for a refund. However, it now appears that I may not be able to get that domain back at all. I had assumed that if I cancelled it, it would become available again, and I could go to Bluehost and register it there. Now, it seems like it’s stuck in limbo somewhere and inaccessible. I desperately need this domain name, and am now panicking that I may have thrown it away by accident. What are my options? If I need to revoke the cancellation and keep it registered through WordPress.com, I will do that. If it becomes available again to register elsewhere, please tell me how long it will take for the domain to become available again. Thank you so much.
Sincerely,
Jennifer Hart -
Hi Jennifer,
Cancelled domains are not released immediately, and it can take anything from a few days to over a year before a cancelled domain becomes available again, if at all. It’s always possible to point and later transfer a domain to another provider. It’s not always possible to get a domain back once cancelled.
In this case, as you cancelled the domain within 24 hours of registering it, it should be deleted completely after 5 days, and you should be able to register it again directly with Bluehost towards the middle of next week.
At the moment we can also still restore the domain to your account with us, after which you can point the domain to Bluehost, and once you’ve owned it for 60 days you’ll be able to transfer it to them completely. But as you’ve already been refunded for the domain I’ll first have to send you a link to pay for it again before I can restore it.
Please let me know which option you would prefer.

Hi Kokkieh,
Thank you so much for your reply. At this time, I’d like to go ahead and restore the domain to my account with you at WordPress.com and transfer it to Bluehost later. Please let me know if this is still an option.
Thank you!

No problem. I’ve restored the domain to your account. Now, click on My Sites – Manage – Domains – DNS
From there you can update the name servers to point the domain over to BlueHost.
Write back if you need more help.
