Need suggestions for a theme

    Greetings,

I’m José, Madrid-based nature & travelling journalist who has recently thought of putting together a blog with all the material I have gathered throughout years of travelling. Being an absolute newcomer to WP – and a helpless IT user at that – before I arm myself with patience and toy around with the WP theme engine – which I don’t mind doing at all – I was wondering whether I could bother you guys about whether you know a theme that would fit what I have in mind.

What I have in mind is a theme whose home webpage wouldn’t be the usual ‘latest posts, ordered by most recent’ but a static menu with a handful of bubbles containing a destination category (think of ‘Spain’, ‘Nordic Countries’, ‘Nature’, ‘Cities’). Upon clicking those bubbles one would be directed to a secondary menu featuring every trip fitting in that category; another click would lead, at last, to the trip itself.

Around that pattern of bubbles in the centre would be the usual blog structure: a heading with a picture, banners containing the featured trip of the week, someone else’s trips, blog description and a little bio, inspiring travel / nature posts or pictures found on the web…

Would a blog the likes of this be out of reach for a 1) not so experienced WP user who 2) would rather stick to a theme free-of-cost?

Thanks in advance and excuse the length,

    JR

    This one looks interesting enough:

But if I were to choose this one, could I…

    1) Add content banners all around (left and right, up and down)?
    2) Edit aspects such as color pattern, background image for each of the bubbles?

  • Good choice! Spun is a minimalist theme but it does allow you to upload a custom header at the top, and widgets at the bottom. You can read more here about how you can customize Spun:

    2) Edit aspects such as color pattern, background image for each of the bubbles?

You would normally create images in a graphics program first and then upload them as your featured image for each post. Each circle displays the post’s featured image. In the theme’s options, you can set the circles to display in colour or black-and-white.

    Have fun!
