Need to change name servers — Domain Details page says domain is not active.

  • Unknown's avatar

why does it say my domain is not active? I would like to change name servers but cannot proceed.

What domain name are you referring to?

To point the domain you registered at WordPress.com to another server (hosting service), please follow the instructions here:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/change-name-servers/#changing-domain-name-servers

Note you will need to obtain the name server values from your current host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as “nameservers” or “NS records” instead.)

Hope this helps – let us know if you have any more questions!

Hi, and thank you! I am following the instructions but am receiving a message that I cannot make changes to name server (or anything here, I think), because the domain is not active. It’s louisvilledogblog.com. Can you tell why I’m getting that message when I click “set nameservers”?

  • Unknown's avatar

When you go through the instructions on this page where do you exactly get stuck?

Otherwise you can provide me the new nameservers and I’ll set these for you :)

Hi again! This is what I would like to point to:
    New A record: 50.62.240.1

In fact, I will be doing the same for my other domain, wecanwingit.com, but haven’t tried that one yet. If you can change it for me, that might be best, at this point.

The part of the instructions that I am getting stuck on is this instruction:
“Under Nameservers, click on the link Set Nameservers.”
When I do that, I get this popup message:
“You cannot change the selected domain because it is not in an active status.”

Pointing your domain to a different host normally requires to change the nameserver records. What’s the name of your new hosting provider? this way I can find the appropriate nameserver records for you and set these.

If you want an A record to be set instead, do you then want it to be set for the root domain (www) or a sub-domain? Note that setting an A record won’t always work unless it’s the IP address of your server or the domain is set up at the new hosting provider’s control panel.

    Hi,
The new host provider is GoDaddy. My setup there prompted me to point to that A record above before proceeding there, and I’d like it to point the root domain, as I don’t think I have any subdomains. Would the fact that my transfer of the domain registration is in process be a factor here?

Are you in the process of transferring both domains? if so, then it’s probably not possible to change the nameserver records. It might take a couple of days before the domain transfer has been completed.

Note that this guide explains how to transfer the domain name to another registrar.

Hi, I am in the process of transferring one of them (the other can’t be transferred for about 50 more days or so because it’s newly registered). Maybe I should wait 48 hours or so to see if that process needs to complete before I can proceed? Sounds like that might be why it’s classified as not active.

Yes, please give it some more time so the transfer process can fully complete.
