Need to minimize redirects? http:// redirect to https://
-
I was testing the speed of my website using pingdom and gtmetrix, among others, and all of these sites are telling me that I need to minimize redirects.
What’s happening is, if I type “paperfrost.com” I am redirected once from “http://paperfrost.com/“ to “https://paperfrost.com?”
If I type “www.paperfrost.com” I am redirected twice from “http://www.paperfrost.com/“ then to “https://www.paperfrost.com/“ and finally “https://paperfrost.com/“

Is there a way to eliminate the redirect from “http” to “https”? I am currently using a Personal Plan.
Thank you!

That answer is no as all sites hosted here are encrypted https:// sites for security reasons. Please read this support doc https://en.support.wordpress.com/https-ssl/#does-https-make-my-site-slower

Hi there,
That redirect is supposed to be there, and has a minimal impact on your site’s loading time. Also, not having that redirect can severely impact your site’s search engine rankings, as it would mean your site does not load consistently over a secure connection, which would be far worse than the site taking a few extra milliseconds to load :)
You need to take all warnings on “performance metrics” sites like this with a grain of salt – these sites tend to give warnings based on completely unrealistic benchmarks, and many of them do it with the sole purpose of getting you to buy some optimisation plugin or service that they develop.
On WordPress.com we handle all necessary optimisation behind the scenes for you to ensure your site has a proper balance between fast load times, and following best practices in terms of SEO and security, and there is nothing you can configure manually in that regard.

Ah I see. I started wondering how reliable the test sites were when I got vastly different load times each time I tested my site. XD
Thanks for the explanation, kokkieh! :)
