Need WWW before the domain name.

  • Unknown's avatar

I just registered a new blog and purchased the domain allthingsmandyp.com

I cannot seem to get it to load the page as http://www.allthingsmandyp.com which is how I want it displayed when people visit the site.

I have already added it as a cname as instructed in your support help, but when i type that in, it still reverts back to allthingsmandyp.com without the www.

I intended the site to read http://www.allthingsmandyp.com as the standard url and any variations of it leading to that domain – not the one with the www. lacking.

    Please help.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

If this is not possible, I would like to refund the amount charged for the original domain and have it changed to http://www.allthingsmandyp.com and pay for that domain instead as that was my goal.

    Please advise asap. Thanks!

    Hi there!

WordPress.com automatically removes the “www” from you web address. Your domain, http://www.allthingsmandyp.com, will always be redirected to allthingsmandyp.com, so you can feel free to use either version on your business cards or elsewhere.

Redirecting the first version of your URL to the second version helps to ensure that search engines index your site properly. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to switch them. All domains through WordPress.com redirect to the allthingsmandyp.com version.

Canceling and re-purchasing this domain will not change this behavior.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me again if you have any more questions.

So should I consider a refund and going elsewhere then… seems to me, I should be able to have it display with a full url…?

Even if you take your domain elsewhere, pointing it at your WordPress.com site means that the ‘www’ will be stripped.

The ‘www’ part of URLs is extraneous now. It’s a legacy syntax from when the internet was young and webpages needed to specify that they were part of the World Wide Web. Since this isn’t necessary anymore, neither is the ‘www’ prefix on your domain.

If you feel very strongly that you need the ‘www’ to appear when people visit your site, then yes you’ll need to take your domain and your site to a new host.

Since you domain was just registered, there is a 60 day transfer lock that is enforced by the registrar. We have no control over this and can not waive it.

Additionally, we highly suggest that if you wish to continue using a domain, you should not cancel it under any circumstances. Once you cancel a domain it goes back to the registrar. Then the registrar will decide when and if to release the domain back to the public for repurchase. If you cancel your domain, you may never get it back.

Let me know if you have any further questions about the lack of ‘www’ or the domain transfer or cancellation policies!
