  I’m looking to switch our website to you guys but I don’t want to discontinue our current one until it is ready, can I do that?

  That’s no problem. You can start by creating a free site here (with an address containing .wordpress.com), adding or importing content and customising a theme. When you are ready, the existing domain can be mapped or transferred to WordPress.com.
