New domain registered via wordpress.com account is redirecting to primary domain but wanted to setup as separate website
-
Hi there,
Help needed please – I registered a new domain under my current wordpress.com user account but I didn’t realise that it would become mapped to my primary domain for this account.
So, now that I wanted to set up a brand new self-hosted WordPress site with that new domain it automatically redirects to that primary domain.
I’ve got a self-hosted package with Hostgator and set up the WordPress element but the wp-admin link provided by Hostgator doesn’t go to the new domain wp-admin link but instead, it automatically goes to that primary wp-admin dashboard.
I’ve tried to set up another wordpress.com user account and transfer that new domain to it but it doesn’t seem to work – it gives me access to all the domains like my original wordpress.com user account.
Not sure what to do, getting so confused by it all and would love any advice please.
Apologies if it’s a little messy and not explained the best – I’m struggling to even work out what’s happened.
All I know is I wish I didn’t register a new domain with WordPress.com that isn’t relevant (for redirection) to that primary domain.
Would it be best to simply transfer to another registrar eg. Hostgator, Namecheap or GoDaddy and wait the 60 days for it to take effect?
Many thanks for the advice!

Hi –
Are you asking for help with zentravellife.com or a different domain? That one was recently registered on this account.
While you aren’t able to transfer the domain until it is 60 days old, you can still point it to another platform. It’s registered with WordPress.com but you don’t have to use it here.
The 60 day waiting window is an ICANN regulation so there’s no way around that bit. Editing the name servers to point it to another platform though will do what you need for the time being.
Take a look at these instructions: https://en.support.wordpress.com/move-domain/change-name-servers/
If you find out the exact name servers needed from your new host we can help you edit those on our end and get the domain pointed there, instead of pointing to us at WordPress.com.
I hope that helps clarify some of the confusion. Write back to me with more questions.

Thank you kindly Lizkarkoski for your post and advice, it’s very much appreciated.
Awesome I’ve changed the name servers as per that document linked but have a feeling the issue is with the propagation timing (causing the redirection of the wp-admin dashboard and url) which could be up to 48 hours.
So will check back on it again once that time period has lapsed.
Many thanks,

48 hours is often the max; if you’ll turn off your computer overnight it will often work by the next day or so. I did confirm it’s working here now, so you should see it soon too. And if you’d like you can still transfer the domain after 60 days as well.
Happy new year!

Thank you supernovia – much appreciated for the information. Did as suggested and it’s now working.
Have a lovely New Year!
