New Follower email privacy
-
Hi,
I had a new follower and received their email address in my emails.
I told them and they stopped following me.
I was surprised that I was sent this information – did they know that their email address would be shared with me?
Thanks,
RobThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Rob –
Thanks for getting in touch. Was this a follower on elijahandcrumpet.wordpress.com?
So, anytime someone signs up to follow a blog either through their Reader or Email account, the site owner gets sent a notification. The email addresses that follow your site can be seen from your account as well under My Sites – Manage – People – Email Followers

Thanks,
Yes, it was. I have removed the button now.
Also, if they choose to receive emails, how does that impact the view numbers for your blog page? Might you have 100 people reading, but your hits say zero?
Is it generally considered better to allow the email option?
Thanks,
Rob -

That is possible. We have no way of tracking views in emails, so 100 people viewing the email could be 0 views on the site.

I generally think it’s better for your audience to provide your site in whichever way they’re most comfortable with. People consume email daily, but they don’t always visit sites days, so email subscriptions are very convenient for many people.

Makes sense. Thanks for your answers. I guess it’s more about the needs of the consumer rather than hits.
