New Forum

I need to set up a community forum which is only available to members of the community upto 400 people. I have no knowledge of building a website although I am computer literate. Would value any help in what appears to be a simple task. But the descriptions on how to use the editor seem to be too complex for the simple web site I have in mind.

Setting up a forum is not simple, and has nothing to do with the editor.
The editor lets you create blog posts and pages on a basic WordPress site. To create a forum where people can register their own accounts, create and comment on threads, you need dedicated forum software, like the bbPress plugin for WordPress that we’re using for this forum. Additionally to make it private you’ll need a membership plugin on top of that, so that content on the site is only accessible to logged-in members.
Using that plugin on a WordPress.com site requires our Business Plan.
For help on how to actually set up the forum, you’d need to contact support for the specific forums plugin you want to use. Support for bbPress can be found in their own forums at https://bbpress.org/forums/, for example.

I am most grateful for your comments and links. Since it will be a closed forum, I don’t think I need a business plan for the plug ins you mentioned so dedicated software seems to be the way to go. It seems to be very difficult to find out how to establish such a forum but your comments have pointed me in the right direction. Thanks again, Dave
