New user – Is it possible to set up blog like this?

    What I am aiming at is a private blog for our family.. I would like to set it up where on the main page I could have some photos of the family and a place to post breaking news. Then have 10 buttons/links/what-ever-you-call-em with the names of each family member. Ann, Kay, Allan, etc Then all the members of Ann’s family would click on Ann’s button to type in their family news. Allan’s family would write their news under Allan’s button. Then the other family members would click on the different buttons to read the latest news about each family member.

    It will be more of a weekly or montly posting of news and not the string of chat you find on Facebook or the like.

    Hope I make sense, and I hope someone can help me. This is a little beyond my expertise, but sure would like to set up a family blog. Thanks.

    What’s critical is:
    (1) a clear comprehension of the differences between pages and posts > http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/
    (2) a clear comprehension of the fact that there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts and we cannot post to more than that one page. But we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.

    We organize our posts by assigning Categories to them. When we publish a post it automatically appears on the running page for posts and also on the Categories pages and Archives pages. Note: There must be one published post in each Category in order for there to be anything to display.

    Create categories for the families, for example Category – Ann’s family and sub-categories under her children’s names and then assign them to the relevant posts.

    A custom menu allows you to display Categories in tabs along the horizontal navigation where normally only Pages tabs are displayed. If you wish you can also include Pages and custom links in your custom menu as well.
