  I am experimenting with a site under the Free Plan, but the checkout insists on charging £84 for the Premium Plan. What am I doing wrong?

  It seems you already have created a site and set it to private. What exactly are you experimenting with? If you want to add a custom domain to a free site an upgraded plan is required (but it could be the Personal plan rather than the more expensive Premium plan).
