New WordPress site with a new domain name

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi!
I currently have a site and purchased the Camilla template. I have never used this site, I just use the email( what! That is some expensive email) and media temple hosts. I-would like to start a new WordPress site for my massage therapy business.
    I think I am headed towards a WordPress.org. Here are my questions….
    1. I purchased .com through Media Temple. Do I have to purchase .org as well to use WordPress.org site?
    2. Is Media temple a sufficient host for WordPress sites. Previously Graphic designers were doing all of the building but now I will be doing it.

    3. I would eventually like to incorporate online booking and payments.

    4. Do I have to transfer the domain to WordPress still?

    Ok! That is it!!
Thank you so much in advance for your help!
    Best,
    Catie

  • Hi Catie,

I currently have a site and purchased the Camilla template.

Of what site are you speaking? You have never bought anything from us, we don’t sell a theme called Camilla, and the site at http://dreaminginflowersvt.wordpress.com/ does not appear to have been used since it was created in May last year.

    1. I purchased .com through Media Temple. Do I have to purchase .org as well to use WordPress.org site?

No, you don’t. WordPress.org and WordPress.com have nothing to do with whether your site has a .com or a .org domain.

WordPress.org is the site where the WordPress community makes and supports the free WordPress software. WordPress.com is a managed hosting provider for that software.

Regardless whether you use the open source version of WordPress or WordPress.com, your domain can have any extension you want – the domain is just the address where people reach your site, and has nothing to do with the software or hosting setup you use for your site.

If you want to use the self-hosted version of WordPress you’ll need a hosting account, though. You can get that from Media Temple as well, or you can use another popular WordPress host like Bluehost or Pressable:

    Hosting

    2. Is Media temple a sufficient host for WordPress sites. Previously Graphic designers were doing all of the building but now I will be doing it.

I have never used Media Temple, so I cannot comment on whether or not they’re a good host. I suggest you look at online reviews from people who’ve used them, and also compare the plans they offer to plans offered by other hosts, so you can make an informed decision based on what you’ll need for your site.

    3. I would eventually like to incorporate online booking and payments.

For that you’d need to use plugins to extend the features of the WordPress software. We recommend WooCommerce and its extensions for this, but you’ll also find other options if you search the plugin directory at https://wordpress.org/plugins

    4. Do I have to transfer the domain to WordPress still?

WordPress.org is not a hosting or domain provider, so you cannot transfer a domain there, and it would only make sense to transfer your domain to WordPress.com if you were planning to use the domain with a site hosted by us.

When you do decide on a hosting provider you can decide whether you want to transfer the domain to them or leave it registered with Media Temple. Many people prefer to keep their domain and hosting separate, but it’s really up to you, with neither option necessarily being better or worse.

For more advice or help with using the WordPress.org software, please ask at https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

In this forum we can only help with sites hosted on WordPress.com.
