Newbie feels much pain, cannot log in or create static home page

  Cannot login with the correct blog name or email address. Cannot change password even. Though I’m using the correct one, just gives me error message. Really frustrating trying to get started with WordPress. Am on the free plan. Cannot, once get in by clicking confirm email (which gives me the blogname to use as login, but won’t allow me to change password). Also, for the life of me, despite following instructions from WordPress own write-up, can’t set up a static home page or download a style to use for it. Can you help or is WordPress simply for designers and developers? Let me know. Thanks. (email visible only to moderators and staff)
