Numerous Questions from a Confused Newcomer

  • Unknown's avatar

I feel like I wandered out into unfamiliar terrain and immediately sunk neck deep in quicksand. I can’t move forward without a lot of questions answered. I’m so out of my element, I don’t know if I’m even asking the right questions. Please correct any misconceptions.

The features of the Personal $4 per month plan.
I will use no video or music, just blog posts composed of mixed text and photos. I don’t want any ads.
#1: I want traffic stats. Does the plan have that?
#2: I want a Contact feature. Does it have that?
#3: Is the $4 Personal plan right for me? After confirming this, I will pay for the plan.

After confirming my email, the screen asked to give my site a name. I want to name it “Flight of Imagination” (flight, not flights).
#4: Can anyone tell me if that name is already taken?
#5: If it is taken, does it matter in blog world as long as I have a unique domain? There are a lot of blogs in the world. Perhaps duplicates are inevitable and normal. I have no idea. Let me know if I need to select a different name.

    Domain selection
#6: I don’t want to lock in a domain until I find out if Flight of Imagination is already taken as a site name as mentioned above. I want to have Flight of Imagination in the domain. Based on the answer, I’ll then I’ll select a domain.

    Posting MS Word Documents
#7: I do all my writing in MS Word. Can those be posted directly into WordPress, or do I have to rewrite from square one the entire document and re-insert photos inside a WordPress screen using your fonts, colors, formatting, etc.

    Home Page
#8: I have a mock-up in a Word document of how I want my home page to look. Will WordPress allow me to use MS Word fonts in my blog title and other home page headings? I get the impression I can’t. If not, perhaps there is something comparable
#9: I want an ultra-basic, minimalist home page. No photos or design features. I see it having only a solid, light green background; a title; my name (I want to use John Penn); a small, single letter character as an ornament; Home, About the Author, and Contact buttons under my name; when the site loads, it displays right there a list of my blog titles down the center of the screen, and under that, “Older” with a down arrow. The titles can be either a continuous scroll or displayed in sections of the whole list.
#10: Would this be easy to do working with a Happiness Engineer and that would be the next step?
#11: Would it be so simple, I could pay for blog design at less than the $499 price? I’ll have to learn site operations, but I want to get on with creating content, not page design if possible. If I were operating through a secure channel, I could email my mock-up to someone in support as a visual aid.

Well, to start, these are some questions at my current level of understanding. Are you seeing things I’m not even aware of?

    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi there!

I’ll try to answer all your questions one by one :)

I want traffic stats. Does the plan have that?

Yes, all our plans have detailed Stats available, you can read more about them here:

    https://wordpress.com/support/stats/.

I want a Contact feature. Does it have that?

Correct. Again, you can add a Form Block to any page or post on any of our plans. You can customize the form to gather the info you need:

    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/form-block/.

Is the $4 Personal plan right for me? After confirming this, I will pay for the plan.

If you’d like to create a minimalist blog with no ads, and you’re not interested in uploading videos or audio files, I’d say Personal plan is the right one for you. Just bear in mind that the storage space for your images on that plan is of 6GB.
If you’re thinking of uploading many hi-res images, you may need to consider upgrading at some point.

After confirming my email, the screen asked to give my site a name. I want to name it “Flight of Imagination” (flight, not flights).

While flightofimagination.wordpress.com is already taken, I wouldn’t worry about it too much because you will anyway register a custom domain. There can be numerous variations on domains; it’s best if you go to this page, and search for it:

    https://wordpress.com/domains/add/.

As for the name itself – try Googling the name of your blog and see what comes up. You’ll see what you’ll “be competing” with. There may be blogs with the same name but are they about the same topics you’d like to write? Are they still being updated? Do you think people could get confused between the two sites? These are some questions worth considering.

I do all my writing in MS Word. Can those be posted directly into WordPress, or do I have to rewrite from square one the entire document and re-insert photos inside a WordPress screen using your fonts, colors, formatting, etc.

We do not recommend creating your posts in other text processors like MS Word. It’s a completely different software, and trying to copy-paste test from there can actually create more work for you, as you’d have to remove any unwanted formatting.

We have created our editor to give you easy access to a number of features like adding images, quotes, different types of forms, and many, many other:

    https://wordpress.com/support/video-tutorials/using-the-block-editor/.

I have a mock-up in a Word document of how I want my home page to look. Will WordPress allow me to use MS Word fonts in my blog title and other home page headings?

Similarly to what I said above, we strongly recommend working with our inbuilt tools. If you’d like help with creating your site, feel free to fill the form at https://wordpress.com/do-it-for-me/ and my colleagues will get back to you. We can create the website for you, and you’ll only have to worry about adding your content :)

I hope that helps. Let me know if you have more questions.
