On Choosing a Theme….where to begin!?

I really want to have a free theme if possible; my requirement is as much customization as possible- I MUCH prefer a more cumbersome theme, if learning it will allow more control.
That said, the only way I have found to approach my choice is to click a theme, and then learn allll about that particular theme. Given how many there are, I’m not making much progress. Is there any comparison lists? When I look at two themes they appear practically the same, like the differences pretty minimal. I have to download, then start playing around, then go onto another; this is getting crazy!I reallllly don’t want to do a pay theme and if I do I don’t know how much $ I can put on it, so hopefully the most elaborate/customizable free one(s) are options for me.

[fwiw, I don’t really have it setup at all yet, all of my attempts are just “test” / play attempts, as I don’t see the point of going as far as I can with one theme, only to find that I should’ve had another! There has to be a more efficient way to choose!

This support forum is only for free hosted WordPress.com blogs. The site linked to above is not a free hosted WordPress.com blog and you are posting to the wrong support forum.
WordPress.COM and WordPress.ORG are completely separate and if that’s the site you need help with then this is the correct forum for your software http://wordpress.ORG/support/ If you have not registered a WordPress.org username account yet you can do so on the top right hand corner of the page I just linked to so you can post to those support forums.

Can I play with the themes, and the hosting that is offered here for free, to decide? As in, if I approached it that way, would I be able to setup with wordpress.org’s program + hostgator, and simply do all the same steps I did here? Or are the themes completely different?
