Our website content has disappeared

We have not removed it ourselves. But everything has vanished. All pages, pictures, and copy are gone, even the activity log does not register anything after the first post. As the site was originally put together for us, by a professional, we do not have a backup.
Is there a way to recover this lost data?
Is there any explanation for how this could have happened, and how do we avoid this happening again in the future?
– The password had been changed. We had to reset it to access our account. Does this mean we were hacked? -
What is the URL of the website in question? Is it one of your WordPress.com sites? Or a WordPress site hosted elsewhere?

Your site is not hosted with WordPress.com. It is a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but hosted with AWS.
Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely separate entities, we cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers.
