page template settings

For some reason when I change my theme the page template settings revert to the default template. This happens no matter what theme I switch to, I am not referring to any custom theme, simply the twenty____ themes downloaded from WP. All of my page templates are still visible and could be re-selected in the dropdown option. I have cleared the cache and that does not help. I have also tried to manage the transient file settings in the options table. I have removed the twenty___ themes and re-downloaded current versions. I have searched google for any other solutions with no success. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
