pages not displaying properly in header

Hi, starting up a new blog with a new theme, and am encountering a problem with the page ordering in the header area. I have ordered the pages so that there should be a number of “main pages” visible in the header area on the home page (“about”, “D.C. hikes”, “int’l hikes”) and I have also created other pages with a main page “parent”, so that they should be visible under a drop down menu for the associated “main page” parent (e.g., “about”–>”us”; and “int’l hikes”–>”Milford Track”).

When I first created the blog, I did not have these pages ordered correctly in dashboard and I created three pages that I wanted to be “subpages” where I did not change their default setting as “main page” / parent pages. Now, my home page seems “stuck” and is showing these three subpages in the header area as “main pages”. This problem persists even though in the dashboard I have changed all the settings and, in dashboard, the subpage correctly shows the assiged parent “main page” and order etc. (and conversely, the “main pages” all show the correct order in the dashboard, but are not appearing in the header area).

I’ve logged in from two different computers and cleared browsing history etc but the appearance is still “stuck”.

    help?

    thanks in advance

  • Hi there, it looks like you’ve set up and activated a Custom Menu under Appearance > Manus.

The menu you created there is being used by your theme at the moment, overriding any parent/child page relationships you’ve set up for your pages.

There are two ways to generate a menu in WordPress:

    1) You can let it be generated by default, based on the parent/child pages relationships you set up.

    2) You can override the default menu by creating a Custom Menu, as you’ve done.

If you prefer to go with the first method, just unassign the Custom Menu you’ve created from the theme, by selecting the blank line from the drop-down menu in the Theme Locations box. This will remove your “preferred hierarchy” menu from the theme, as you can see in this screenshot:

If you still need any help, just let me know.
