Password problems

Hello! I seem to be completely locked out of my website dashboard somehow. I cannot reset my password. I can update my password in my wordpress account page (I don’t actually know if they’re the same login) but it won’t work when trying to use the new password to login to my dashboard. When I use the ‘lost password’ link, I add my email address in (and I’ve tried all of my email addresses, just in case) but it doesn’t recognise them. What can I do? I can’t contact a support team – my only option is to post this message in a forum. Sorry to be posting such a boring topic! The link to advice on how to recover a password seems to involve running some code or something – something about PHP which I have no idea about. I turned on two-step authentication but this hasn’t allowed me access. How can I get back into my website dashboard? Thank you

  • What is the URL of the site you’re trying to access?

  • Your site is not hosted with WordPress.com. It is a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) but hosted elsewhere.

Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are two entirely separate entities, we cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on our servers. You can find more information here about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

https://wordpress.org/support/ is a great resource for sites using the open source WordPress.org software, and you can find support for that at: https://wordpress.org/support/forums/

And, they do have some options for you at https://wordpress.org/support/article/resetting-your-password/

Your hosting provider’s support team may also be able to assist.
