  I thought wordpress was free but, I had to pay today ? Why. I have had this for many years now but now I needed to pay for it

  You must have ended up with an upgrade in your cart somehow. You should be able to get rid of that by going to https://wordpress.com/checkout/https://wordpress.com/checkout/ and then:

  – Click “edit”
  – Click trash can icon
  – Confirm the deletion on the pop up
