Payment for Ads

    Hello all,

    I was wondering what the reason was for the new fee to remove ads from WordPress websites. I used to have a previous account for work several years ago and I do not recall having to pay to have ads removed. I just wanted to understand the reasoning for this.

    Hi there,

    We have always had ads on our free sites to help cover our hosting costs, but it may be the case that you are referring to a site that has an upgrade (which would not show ads) or a site hosted with another provider.

    We are not the only provider of WordPress sites, if you can share the URL of your other site I’m happy to take a closer look and determine why there are no ads on it. I can confirm that on WordPress.com, to remove ads requires an upgrade.
