permalinks give 500 error

  Hi,

  Faced a problem with my permalinks. Every time I enter or change something in the permalinks, the whole website (wordpress dashboard included) gives a 500 error. Just accessing the permalinks tab gives the same result. Tried every possible solution found on the Web but nothing seems to help. Could you give me a lead as to what could be wrong? ( I have a feeling that it is something connected to the front/home page, but even if I’d try to change the front page to another one it would instantly give the 500 error)
