Phasing out classic editor and losing insert symbol functionality

I’m slightly confused as to the logic behind phasing out the classic editor, when it has the best functionality. Just one example is that it always used to have an ‘insert symbol’ option on its menu, although this has now disappeared – why isn’t this on the paragraph block menu? Can’t you see how inconvenient it is to have to search for the symbol, accent, etc. that you want and copy it into the editor? All of the recent changes haven’t felt like upgrades, they just feel like change for change’s sake.

The shift away from the Classic Editor comes down to a change in web philosophy: the old editor treated a page like a text document, whereas the modern Block Editor treats it as a collection of design layout components. In making that switch, the core development team removed the legacy ‘Insert Symbol’ (Omega) menu item, assuming writers would use their computer’s native system-wide character panels instead (which you can open instantly by pressing Windows Key + . on Windows or Cmd + Ctrl + Space on a Mac). If you find the block interface disruptive to your workflow, you can easily get your preferred environment back by installing the official Classic Editor plugin from your dashboard. This completely restores the traditional text toolbar and word-processing functionality you are used to!
