PHP customization?

  Hi, I’ve been having issues fully customizing my blog to include little things like-

  *Cut down on length of posts displayed on the main-page (changing the content() to entry())
  *Let users add comments off the main page (instead of redirecting to the post’s page)
  *View comments along with posts off the main page (2-3, nothing special)
  *View on-page (highlights) where search results take you

  And I noticed how plugins can be installed to fix issues, but only if my blog is hosted somewhere off of wordpress. Isn’t there any way I could access the FTP of my site’s content-directory so I can fix these things myself?

  We’re just a blogging service and don’t offer FTP access or the ability to edit the PHP files.

  The only things from your list that can be done are comments on the main page, but only if you use the P2 theme: http://theme.wordpress.com/themes/p2/
