PHP expert but NEW TO WORDPESS
-
I know PHP inside out but have never used WordPress. When people want a site building I do it in PHP / MySQL etc.
I now have a couple of clients who want me to program in WordPress, so thought I had better learn it.
I have installed and set WordPress up and of course understand the PHP it is built around.
However, I am looking for some tips on how to learn the most things in the shortest possible time (time is money I hope you understand).
I am not lazy, just concious of spending ages when I may not need to (as I intend to carry on with PHP / MySQL for everyone else).
Can someone give me some pointers on what to learn and a brief understanding how I can use my PHP knowledge on WordPress? I would love to just start writing PHP and integrate that with WordPress
-e.g your answer may be
“Learn how to implement WordPress Themes and Plug-Ins – this is 80% of what you need to know and what most of your customers will want”If I was advising somebody who had only driven an unleaded/petrol car who wanted to drive a diesel van I would advise:
(a) expalin the different type of fuel
(b) to drive out in a van for 5 minutes to experience it
= I wouldn’t send them on a van-driving 3 day training course (hope this helps explain my position)(2) Also, someone has a site completely written in WordPress. When I get access to their site how will it differ from a standard PHP / MySQL site that I am so used to?
Thanks for all your help, and I appologise for my haste in learning WordPress, I am sure many people have spent years learning it only for me try to do it in 3 hours.

The first thing is, you’re in the wrong forum. Here at WordPress.COM we don’t have access to the PHP at all. If someone wants you to “implement WordPress themes and Plugins” they are talking about a WordPress.ORG blog instead. There is a sticky thread at the top of the forum that will explain the difference. You want to be at the other forum.
