PHP Issues With 5.8 Update

    Hello!

I will try to provide as many details as possible, but I am fairly inexperienced with back end components of websites.

When I first noticed the site was down the website came up with ‘Critical Error’ and would not display the webpage. The same message appeared when trying to log into the website using the admin feature. I contacted my hosting service who was able to help troubleshoot the PHP update they just did, in addition to view the files that are connected to the website. He was able to get it working well enough that I was able to get access to wordpress admin. The website now displayed googles security message for an unsecure site (SSL certificate is expired). The tech then had me check all the plug ins to see if they were the reason for the security issue, and they were not. Next he had me reinstall the 5.8 update (it was already installed as my dashboard was set to automatically install updates, this was a re install option the dashboard had). After preforming the re-install, every time I try accessing the site it prompts a PHP download to the computer. I also was able to still see in the dashboard on wordpress but any time I clicked on a tab on the side tool menu it would also download a PHP file associated with those links. I did find in the 5.8 information that this update is meant to only work with PHP 8. The host I am using only JUST updated to PHP 7.4 and this leads me to believe that the issue is the hosts PHP is not compatible with the new updates PHP. So what I am wondering is, is there a way to roll back the update to an older version or what can I do to fix this issue?!

As a side note, I will also be looking to see if wordpress has a SSL option to purchase to secure my site. I didn’t ever have to purchase one in the past to I am new to that side as well and was recommended by the hosting service to find a third party vendor to acquire the certificate.

    Hi there,

Your site is not hosted with WordPress.com. It is a site using the open-source WordPress software (from WordPress.org) and is hosted by megawebservers.

Because WordPress.com and WordPress.org are different, we cannot access files or data for sites that are hosted elsewhere, so WordPress.com staff can only assist with sites that are hosted on WordPress.com.

You can find more information here about the differences between WordPress.org software and WordPress.com: https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/

You can reach out to your host for help with your site. Since they’re hosting your site’s files, they also have access to those files and could also be able to help you here.

The WordPress.org forums are also a great resource for sites using the open-source WordPress.org software, and you can find support for that at: https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting
