Please can I have a refund for my domain name as I meant to set up self-hosted?

    I have just begun learning about websites, blogging and WordPress and so didn’t know the difference between wordpress.com and wordpress.org. I meant to set up a self-hosted site, but instead ended up buying the domain name add-on. I had to go away for three days and did some more research when I returned, only to find I was on the wrong track and had paid $31 for my mistake (just missing the two day refund cut-off).

    There’s no need to cancel your domain. And indeed, you risk losing it permanently when you cancel. You can point the domain you registered at WordPress.com to another server (hosting service), with these steps:

    Change a Domain’s Name Servers

    You’ll need to obtain the name server values from your host. You should be able to find them on their support documentation, or contact them and ask for the information. (Name servers may be referred as “nameservers” or “NS records” instead.)

    Then, once 60 days have passed from when you registered the domain initially, you can transfer your registration to another domain registrar if you wish using these instructions:

    I have already changed the name servers. It doesn’t seem to be working (yet?).

    The part I really don’t understand is that I had already bought the domain name from another company on the same day, but while the payment was going through I’m guessing WordPress beat them to it and registered my domain for me instead.

    I would have thought that clicking the option to ‘use custom domain I have purchased elsewhere’ would mean that WordPress couldn’t register it for me. Instead I would expect to have to wait a few days while my host received payment and registered it.

    Was obviously just too keen to get up and running :-)

    So you should be good to go. Remember, in 60 days, you can transfer registration to whatever registrar you’d like.
