Plugins on personal plan

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hey,

I have a personal plan, and have always known you cannot install plugins on this plan, but when browsing the plan options on wordpress.com, I noticed each plan has a ‘install plugins’ option on them and wondered what this meant, or if it is an error?

    Thanks

    Hello @foundfootagenerd,

That’s a great question and I can see how that might catch your eye when looking over the plan details!

This isn’t an error, it’s actually part of a new promotion we’re running. New users who join WordPress.com can now try plugins even on Personal and Premium plans. Existing sites, however, still have the same plan features as before, meaning plugin installation requires at least the Business Plan.

If you’d like to gain plugin access while staying on the Personal Plan, there’s a workaround:

    1. Remove your existing plan by following these steps: https://wordpress.com/support/manage-purchases/cancel-a-purchase/#remove-a-purchase
→ Please note that this will also remove any remaining time left on your current plan.
    2. Re-upgrade to the Personal Plan following the steps here: https://wordpress.com/support/manage-purchases/upgrade-your-plan/

Once that’s done, your site will be treated as a “new” Personal Plan site, and you’ll have access to install plugins as part of this promotion.

Let me know if you have any questions!

    Interesting, thanks.

So will the install plugins on personal/premium plan be unlimited and for the entire time an account is valid?

And is this going to be a permanent thing? Shame it doesn’t automatically include current users though.

    Thanks for the info.

BTW, the one thing I really want to do is edit html so I can add schema code.

If I had plugin support, and installed an edit html plugin to add schema code, would this work? Or does this still need business plan?

    Thanks

    Hello @foundfootagenerd,

So will the install plugins on personal/premium plan be unlimited and for the entire time an account is valid?

Yes, with this promotion, you can install as many plugins as you’d like on your site, there’s no specific limit. Just keep in mind that installing too many can slow things down, so it’s best to stick with the ones you truly need.

And is this going to be a permanent thing?

As long as your plan remains active under the current promotion, you’ll continue to have access to plugins and all other features included with your plan.

the one thing I really want to do is edit html so I can add schema code.

If I had plugin support, and installed an edit html plugin to add schema code, would this work? Or does this still need business plan?

And regarding your goal to add schema markup, you can absolutely use a schema or HTML editing plugin for that purpose, without needing to upgrade to the Business Plan. Plugins like Rank Math SEO and Yoast SEO are popular and beginner-friendly, though they don’t cover every schema type.

For more flexibility, you might want to explore other options in our plugin directory here: https://wordpress.com/plugins/browse/schema

This guide also walks through the process of adding schema markup step-by-step: https://wordpress.com/blog/2025/07/15/add-schema-markup-to-wordpress/

    Thanks.

I like to do the schema myself manually by just adding it to the html, obviously on personal plan I cannot do that, but with a plugin is html editing allowed via one of the plugins?

    Hello @foundfootagenerd,

Yes, with the right plugin, you can absolutely edit HTML on your Personal Plan site, even though direct code editing isn’t included. Many schema or code-injection plugins will allow you to safely add custom HTML, JavaScript, or structured data without needing to upgrade to the Business Plan.

For example, you could use a plugin designed for custom code insertion or schema management. These let you add your schema manually in the HTML section of your pages or posts. This way, you have full control over your structured data while staying on the Personal Plan.

Hope that makes things clearer. Let me know if there’s anything else I can do for you!
