Cancel a subscription

To cancel a subscription, follow the steps below.

⚠️

If you have a plugin-enabled site, consider downloading a backup of your site or exporting your website’s content before canceling.

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Hover over your profile in the upper right corner and click the “My WordPress.com Account” button:
The My WordPress.com Account button is shown.
  1. On the left side, select the Purchases menu option:
The profile menu with a highlight around the "Purchases" section.
  1. Find the subscription you want to cancel, then click it to open the Purchase Settings page.
An arrow pointing to the product name in the purchases page.
  1. Scroll to the bottom of the screen and click the “Cancel plan” option (or “Cancel domain” for domains or “Cancel subscription” for email, add-ons, and other purchases):
The "Cancel plan" button with a future expiry date.
  1. On the next screen, review the information and click the “Cancel subscription” button:
The cancellation screen shows a red cancel subscription button at the bottom.
  1. Complete the cancellation survey to tell us why you’re canceling, and continue until you receive confirmation of the cancellation.

Canceling disables auto-renewal. Your subscription stays active until its expiry date, and you won’t be charged again.

Canceling does not issue a refund. To end a subscription right away and claim an eligible refund, select “Remove and claim refund” from the notice at the top of the cancellation screen (see Remove a subscription immediately below).

If you see a cancellation error

If you see the message “There was a problem cancelling — contact support” or a similar error during cancellation, try these steps first:

  1. Confirm you’re the owner of the subscription. Only the user who purchased a subscription can cancel it. If someone else on your site bought the plan, ask them to cancel it from their account.
  2. Refresh the Purchases page and try cancelling again.
  3. Try in a different browser or an incognito window. Browser extensions or stale session data can interfere with the cancellation form.

If the error persists after trying these steps, contact support with a screenshot of the error message and the name of the subscription you’re trying to cancel. We can cancel it for you and process any eligible refund.

Remove a subscription immediately

You will need to remove the subscription from your site if you wish to delete a site or receive a refund.

Removing a subscription immediately forfeits any remaining time on the subscription and removes the features from your site.

To remove a subscription immediately, follow steps 1–5 above to cancel a subscription, then select “Remove and claim refund” from the notice at the top of the screen. If the purchase is eligible for a refund, the eligible amount is refunded automatically when you remove it. If the purchase is not eligible for a refund, the “Remove and claim refund” link will not appear on the cancellation screen.

After canceling or removing a plan

Your site will continue to work after your plan is removed or expires. Your posts, pages, and media files stay on your site. Your site reverts to a free site, which means some features will change based on the free site’s limitations.

Site address

Once your plan is removed or expires, your site uses the .wordpress.com site address. You can set the site to private if you may want to access the content again, export the content to use elsewhere, or delete the site entirely.

Audio & video

Your existing audio and video files will continue to work and remain embedded in your pages and posts. However, if your new plan doesn’t support audio or video uploads, you won’t be able to upload new files. You can upload new audio or video files by upgrading your plan.

Storage space

Your existing media files are safe and will not be deleted. Free sites include 1 GB of media storage (3 GB for sites created before March 31, 2022). If your media exceeds the available storage space, you won’t be able to upload new media until you upgrade your plan or free up space by deleting files.

Plugins

If you remove a plan immediately, all plugins and content created with those plugins are removed right away. If you cancel a plan, these features stay until your plan expires.

Your site returns to how it looked before installing the first plugin, theme, or custom code. The site becomes private so you can review it before making it public again.

The process to remove these features from your site can take between 10 minutes and a few hours once the plan is removed. You’ll receive an email when the process is complete.

Third-party themes

Third-party themes are not supported on the free plan and are therefore removed. WordPress.com themes and customizations remain if supported on a free site.

Restore a canceled subscription

If you change your mind after canceling a plan, or if your subscription expired, you can restore it:
