Plugins? wtf?
-
I’m just learning wordpress right now…. I’m working on installing some plugins to my page.. Watching a tutorial, the plugin page is supposed to be underneath the ‘appearance’ tab, but I don’t see anything nearby. Can someone help me out?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I’m confused by your answer… you linked me to the blog page?
To install a plugin I’m supposed to go to a plugin tab nn my dashboard or admin page right? But there isn’t a ‘plugin tab’.

If you want FTP access and to install plugins or third party themes into a site then you will have to hire a web host http://wordpress.org/hosting/ and set up your own WordPress.org install.
There is no FTP access and no blogger installed plugin capability on any free hosted WordPress.com blogs.

http://support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/There is no upgrade you can purchase here that provides FTP access and the ability to install plugins and or any third party themes.

No Plugin’s at WordPress.COM, security and reliability reasons – stop reading instructions about WordPress.ORG installs

This might be a topic for another thread…
I’ve read a bit about each one and I’m still not sure which option is the best for me. Right now I’m not sure which site to use, WordPress.com, .org, or maybe even wix. Do you have any advice?
Right now I have a flavors.me portfolio (http://taylor-shain.flavors.me/) and I’m looking to upgrade to a more functioning website – basically something kind of like this: http://www.chasejarvis.com
Any thoughts?

You’re asking on the WordPress.com forums, so of course we’re going to say, build your site on WordPress.com! :)
Having said that, it’s really a matter of priorities and preferences. We don’t have a theme/functionality that allows an image to “slide” in like the site you referenced. We do, however, have over 275 themes, which is more than most other website platforms. We also allow you to add a custom domain, customize your site, and do other things more inexpensively than many other sites. However, some of them offer other features we do not, so it’s always worth doing your homework.
You will likely have the most flexibility and control over your content and functionality with a self-hosted WordPress site using the software at WordPress.org, and you can really build any kind of site you want. That, however, requires you to obtain and manage your own hosting, backups, security, and upload and update your themes and plugins. There is no built-in support, so you will need to hire a third-party developer for anything you can’t do yourself or if something breaks and you don’t know how to fix it.
At any rate, if you don’t want the same bells and whistles (the fancy moving parts) that are on the chasejarvis.com site, but you want the same kind of content, you can certainly do that on WordPress.com. (In fact, other than the bells and whistles, I don’t really find that site to be that aesthetically pleasing. :) ).

Hey Jackie,
Thanks so much for your detailed post. After thinking about it, I think I’m going to create a .org site. It will give me more flexibility going forward in the future… and I like the idea of learning how to web design.
Thanks!
