Pop-up ad at top of page

Since a few days I get a very annoying advertising area that pops up at the top of the page. It covers part of the header image.
Although it is possible to close it, I would prefer to get rid of it.
How can I do this? Deleting cookies does not help.
    This is how it looks:

  • Hi there,

Sometimes, we display advertisements on WordPress.com sites, in order to keep free features free. We try to make the ads discreet and to only run them in limited places.

To entirely eliminate ads on your blog, you can purchase a WordPress.com Premium or Business plan. You can read more about what is included in our plans here:

That’s exactly what I suspected. I have no problem with small advertisements in the blog post, but this type of ad is really annoying. It’s not discreet!
    Will it disappear some day?

    Hi mitenerifeblog,

Ad placement and format may change over time but I can’t guarantee where they will be displayed I’m afraid. As @fstat mentioned, upgrading to a paid plan is the only way to completely remove ads from your site:

This includes Personal, Premium and Business.
