Possible Site Hacking

  • Unknown's avatar

We believe our website may have been hacked on the WordPress end, not through Godaddy where it is hosted. I have screen captures that further detail the issue. But, the website looks fine when we are logged in to wordpress, but on any computer viewing the website while not logged in, there are links to other (legitimate) websites, that also now contain lists of links. For an example, please look here: https://marblefallslibrary.org/join-the-friends/ These strings of links are being inserted randomly as links on photos that have not been updated by us in years, in website footers, in the middle of pages, etc. It is the same string of links each time.

We can find and delete the strings of links, but believe this is indicative of the sites being hacked. Please advise.

  • Hi there,

We can’t help directly because we don’t host marblefallslibrary.org on our WordPress.com managed hosting. As a result we don’t have the ability to take a closer look at your site.

Instead your host (GoDaddy) uses the open-source variant of the WordPress platform which functions differently than what we offer here on WordPress.com. The good news though is that help is available here at the open-source WordPress forums: https://wordpress.org/support/forum/how-to-and-troubleshooting/

The folks at that forum are familiar with the variant of WordPress that is used by GoDaddy, and are in the best position to help. Hope this helps point you in the right direction!
