Post Editor Screen Completely Black

I previously had this issue where my entire screen goes black, I managed to get rid of it when I deactivated Gutenburg but not sure why it’s come back now. I have the theme Twenty Sixteen, not sure if that’s the issue? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi there, since turning off the Gutenberg plugin cleared it before, check Plugins > Installed Plugins and leave Gutenberg deactivated if it has turned itself back on. After that, open the same post editor screen in a Chrome incognito window. A normal-looking editor there usually points back to Chrome, either cached files or an extension. Dark-mode and ad-blocking extensions are especially good at causing weird black-screen surprises. If the editor is still black with Gutenberg inactive and in incognito, send over a fresh screenshot and a list of any editor, dark-mode, or optimization plugins currently active.

I’ve cleared the cache first thing and haven’t installed any new extensions on chrome either. I’ve tried to edit in incognito and the screen still says black

Thanks for the screenshots. Could you try disabling Dracula Dark Mode temporarily, reload the editor, and come back to let us know if that fixes it?

Even after deactivation the editor still remains black

  • Thanks for trying that and letting us know — it’s really helpful to rule things out.

Since the black editor background persists even with Dracula Dark Mode deactivated, in incognito, and with Gutenberg off, this isn’t being caused by a plugin or your browser. What you’re seeing is actually a known issue on our end that affects how the Twenty Sixteen theme’s background color is applied inside the block editor. Essentially, the color value gets injected into the editor in a way that doesn’t respond properly to changes made in the Customizer.

Our development team is already working on a fix for this, and it should be rolling out soon. Meanwhile, there are a couple of options:

    1. Try resetting the Background Color to its exact default — Go to Customizer → Colors & Backgrounds, and set the Background Color to #1a1a1a first, publish, then change it to white (#ffffff) and publish again. Sometimes re-saving the value can nudge the editor CSS to regenerate. It’s a long shot but worth a quick try.
    2. Wait for the fix — Since this is actively being worked on, the editor will return to normal once the update is deployed. Your published posts and site appearance are not affected — this is purely a visual issue inside the editor.

If the black background is making it too difficult to work on posts right now and you’d rather not wait, temporarily switching to a different theme (you could test on a staging site first) would clear it up — but I completely understand if you’d rather hold tight for the fix given your site’s history.

I’ll keep an eye on this and update the thread when the fix goes live. Sorry for the inconvenience in the meantime!

After changing it, instead of the screen going black, it turns white instead, so I might just wait until the next patch :)

Is there any sort of timeframe on when the next fix goes live?

  • Thanks for giving that a try and for your patience with this! The fact that changing the background color shifted the editor from black to white confirms it’s the same underlying issue — the editor is picking up the background color, it’s just not updating the way it should.

The fix for this is actively in development and the code changes have already been submitted for review. While I can’t give an exact date, the fix is in its final stages, so it shouldn’t be too long. Your published posts and site visitors aren’t affected by this — it’s only the editing view.

I’ll update this thread once the fix has been deployed. In the meantime, if the white editor background is easier to work with than the black one, you’re welcome to leave it as is until things are patched up. Thanks again for bearing with us!
