Post Feed Layout

  I am looking everywhere and im really confused how to create a custom layout fo Posts. Some themes have large post feature images with titels in nice big boxes at the top of the template but when i install them my post feed for the majority is a list instead, im wondering what plugins i need to create layouts like this:
