Posting to a category shows there and on the home page. Why?

  I am just learning wordpress. When I do a post, It is showing up in a category and also on the home page. Why is it also on the home page and can I prevent that from happening?

  The home page is the blog, and all blog posts go in the blog. They also go in each category page that applies. If you don’t want them to show on the front page, then you must create a static Page, not a Post, and then select it under settings->Reading as your opening page. Then use a Custom Menu to link to your category pages.

  OK, Thanks raincoaster. You have pointed me in the right direction. I don’t quite get the redundancy and the purpose of categories if every post put in a category ends up on the home page anyway. But, as long as the option to prevent this from happening is there, then I don’t need to understand. I can do it the way that makes most sense to me.
