Posts vs Newsletters

I’m not sure I’ve understood the documentation, but is it possible to have one site where I can post to the blog separately from the newsletter issues? i.e. Can I blog without it being a newsletter? And hence, can I then send a newsletter separately from a blog post?

    Hi there!

Generally speaking, all posts you publish will be emailed to your subscribers. There are ways to publish a post without sending an email. But if you’re starting a new site, you may consider using “Newsletter Category,” which lets new subscribers subscribe to specific categories of your site.

So, if you had a category titled “Newsletter” that’s set as the newsletter category, your subscribers can subscribe only to receive posts from that category. Any posts you publish that aren’t assigned to that category will not be emailed to those subscribers. (But an email will still be sent to all subscribers who didn’t specify that category when subscribing, so they were subscribed to “All content”.)

Hope that helps! Feel free to let us know if you have more questions.

Thank you for your reply. My comments, queries:

“There are ways to publish a post without sending an email” – Not very practical in everyday use unfortunately.

It sounds like the category suggestion resembles most closely what I’m trying to achieve. I’d like to blog small, interesting snippets of information/discussion without “spamming” subscribers and then post a long-form discussion as a newsletter. I can do this using two sites, but I don’t see the point. From a branding perspective, this is not optimal either.

I’m assuming subscribers can change their selections, to receive either/or/and posts and newsletters at any time. Is this correct?

    My best.

  • Hi there,

I’m assuming subscribers can change their selections, to receive either/or/and posts and newsletters at any time. Is this correct?

That is correct. If you offer multiple categories under your Newsletter Category settings, subscribers will be able to choose which they wish to subscribe to (or all) based on their preferences. To illustrate I’ve set this up on my test blog. Notice I’m not including the “Workshops” category in my Newsletter settings:

A visitor to you site will see this when they subscribe:

So you can see that any category you leave out of your newsletter settings becomes unavailable to subscribers, but otherwise they can choose any or all that you have selected.

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
