practice sites

Hello! We are in the process up completely overhauling our website. We are debating paying an independent web builder to make us a WordPress site over doing it ourselves. Is there a way that we can practice building a site and see if it is something we want to do? It is asking for domain and hosting info and we have not decided who and what we will do, it will depend on if we have someone build the site for us or not. Can I create a site without having it live just to practice and get used to your program?

    I don’t have a site with WordPress.com yet

  • Hi there,

If you’re interested in hosting your site here on WordPress.com, you can create a free site using a free .wordpress.com address and start building it. You can even make that site private so that only you can view it.

Once you’re ready, you can move your domain ( or register a new one) and launch your site.

Please note that sites on the free aren’t allowed to install plugins and third-party themes.

That is exactly what I am wanting to do. But where do I go to do that? If I go to my account and click “create a site” it wants my domain that I am not ready to transfer yet.

  • Hi there,

That is not an issue – what you could do is create a site with a free WordPress.com blog address. You are assigned a .wordpress.com or a .home.blog subdomain whenever you create a site with WordPress.com, so you can just use that as the domain as you build the site and determine whether or not this is the platform you want to use. The site starts off private until you are ready to launch it.

Once you are done developing the site, you can make the decision to transfer the domain over:

A paid plan would be needed in order to use the domain for your site:?

    Hope this helps,
